This piece is hauntingly poignant. The juxtaposition of Iryna Zarutska’s tragic death with the quiet tenderness of saving a chipmunk or mourning a spider speaks volumes about the fragility of life, human and otherwise. It’s a raw meditation on violence, media bias, and the aching need for empathy in a world that often feels indifferent.
The writer’s reflections on journalism and the justice system are sobering. “Democracy dies in darkness” isn’t just a phrase, it’s a warning. And yet, amidst the darkness, there’s a flicker of light in the small acts of kindness, the quiet resistance of choosing compassion over apathy.
Thank you for sharing such an intimate and courageous piece. It’s a reminder to look up, to care more deeply, and to never forget the humanity behind the headlines.
It's been a very intense week with murder, war and killings all over the place. It feels like Iryna's murder was so much under the microscope for what it represents, both her quest for a better life but for people around her unable to support and help and guard her. It's not an isolated case. We get used to the violence so as to not to react. So many people have written about Iryna, her fate and the horrific murder. May she rest in peace. The picture of her looking at his face, is telling many stories. Thank you for sharing that. I'm also glad Elizabeth is keeping well. I hope she enjoys her days out before cold weather will keep her cooped up.
Elizabeth is soaking up the sunshine every day, she smells sweet and dusty. I am grateful for every nice day we've been having, she's had such a nice summer this year!
