Round pegs. Round holes. Square pegs in a geometric world Without square holes. As a rule, if the corners and Edges are worn down enough From trying to fit in, A square peg will eventually Tuck into a round hole And stay put, but that’s Dicey at best. Once this happens, These are uncertain times for The Square Peg, because Eventually, they can fall through If too much is worn away. After that happens, they’re no good, Done for—discarded. Sometimes, They are pushed through Should there be a newer (Younger) Round Peg. Those are preferred. Then there are the triangles. Nobody talks about them, Especially the ones With unequal sides. (They are the worst.) They’ll never fit in— At least, not correctly. Triangles might wedge in the Round hole If turned at a certain angle. It’s uncomfortable geometry, Triangles make the Rounds and Squares uneasy. They’re so pointy and sharp. Alone—isolated—yet not at all. There are lots of them, and Other shapes, too. It’s okay To be a triangle, You don’t need to fit in The Round hole to exist.
The lesson is—make your own space.
I always thought I was a square peg, but it appears I am a scalene triangle—
Whatever, I’ve made peace with my spatial awareness, along with my worn-out corners and edges, the chips, cracks, dents, and slivers (ouch!)
Anyway—
I started writing this poe-umm on Sunday morning (yup, yesterday, 3/24/2024). It was just a little thing, a handful of words, a spark. As usual, there was an itch that I needed to scratch. Late last night, I thought, “Huh, you have nothing ready for Monday’s Substack poe-umm post—think fast, rabbit.” So this morning, I asked myself, “What do you got?” There is a poe-umm I would have liked to post, but it was too complicated to do it without several days of prep, so that one is for another day. (I promise.) I decided to poke at that spark of words—scratched it raw because that’s what I do whenever I write something. I made a little skinny column of words. Then I had fun this morning making a little sketch in the studio and—this is it—at least for now. Nothing is written in stone! I like it that way.
