The vet made my wee donkey dopey. My wee donkey, after her trim and vet exam, slowly pulling herself together after sedation. (I love how she was balancing the weight of her head on her snoodle bun.)
All four of her little hooves were trimmed. There was some resistance on her part, very "slow motion" kicking (which is actually kind of funny), then she tipped over, and down she went with such grace that the vet even commented that it was a good controlled fall. The trim proceeded while she was lying down. I was not at all surprised that she still persists to resist, she gets so mad, huffing and puffing. (That's my girl, kicking and snorting, feeling so insulted that someone has dared to come in here, grab her feet, and start shit with her.)
Her teeth are fine, no need for the dental float, no sharp points to be ground down, and all the teeth are firm, no sign of decay. It's rare for a donkey her age to still have the majority of her teeth intact.
I stayed with her until she was up and walking.
Twenty minutes after everyone left, she was up, wobbly like a drunkard, but determined to go outside, and she wobbled her way out the door, down the ramp, and into the paddock to snuffle around.
The trimmed, tiny pins! Everything looked good, no sign of laminitis, nice hard hooves (a miracle with all the rain we've had), no separation of the white line, it's all good. I was worried about nothing. (I wouldn't have it any other way!)
Everyone agreed that she did not look her age at all, and her overall condition is still good. Her fat pads are actually showing signs of shrinking away (which is hard to accomplish with a donkey, once they’ve got them, they usually have them for life) and for a donkey with Cushing’s disease, her coat is nice and soft (due to all the flax in her diet.)
Her 34th birthday was on Monday, I fixed her a “cake” with beet pulp, beet muffins, and the carrots were candles, but they did look more like ears with the muffins for eyes.
I sat on the floor and fed her her cake. She was a happy donkey.
I’m exhausted. It’s hot. I’m going to chill out on the porch with a cold drink, read a book, and very likely take a nap.
I hope everyone is well. Be extra good to yourselves, follow your bliss, and find joy. Remember to be kind to others, okay? You never know what someone is going through—and we’re all going through a lot these days.
